In our last DMH workshop, the topics of discussion were of a few. But, the headlining subject of the day was, "What is it that moves people from belief to action?"
First, I'll just tell what I personally believe could be a right and respectful answer. Sometimes, a person believes in something, hard-on, and they want to act on it, but something's holding them back. It could be resistance from their inner self; it could be the fear of the possible outcomes of their actions; it could even be the very fact that they just happen to lack self-motivation. For this reason, what helps them move from belief to action could be watching others act on their own beliefs, and following in their footsteps. A chain-reaction. Influence.
Afterwards, we were told to create a collage of two outstanding people, describing them the best we possibly could through pictures, drawings, etc. This was a very intriguing activity for me, and although I already knew a bundle of information of the two, I still managed to learn a bundle more things about them once we were finished! The two people were Malcom X and Umar Ibn Al-Khattab.
After we discussed that, we started to bring up an iconic figure we learned about at the workshop before (2 weeks ago): Malcom X. We brushed over the key fact of his amazing transformation. What it was the moved him from belief to action. Which was a series of things, from learning the dictionary cover to cover, to reading and understanding about the religion of Islam, to the experience of performing Hajj--- the pilgrimage to Makkah.
Later, we discussed a new icon: Umar Ibn Al-Khattab. He must have been the icon of the week, because his life-changing transformation was an interesting tale for the fellows and me. He was once an oppressive and aggressive type of man before he accepted Islam. He hated the religion at first, and when his sister first accepted Islam and was caught reading the Quran with her husband by Umar, he was enraged beyond belief. But soon after, he wanted to know what it was that was in this book that his sister was reading so dearly. It was then that his heart and mind (way to go for a great organization name!) was opened to the peace and purity of the religion of Islam. After this and countless encounters with the Prophet Muhammed (S), he changed his way of life. But, he remained a tough & buff type of guy, but this was something the Prophet Muhammed (S) liked about him!
He later became one of the four righteous Caliphs (leaders of the religion after the Prophet) of Islam.
Both of these courageous and moving people may not be alive with us during the 21 century, but they truly are significant role models for the people OF the 21 century, like myself.
This workshop was just another reason I feel I should really start to think about what it is that I'm thinking about!
