Today a few of my friend and I did a presentation in our Islamic Studies class on "Desires and how they can lead to haraam acts.” So we began presenting by asking what does desire mean. After that we explain what it is, than asked what are some of the desire that they face? We got all types of responses;dating,fitting-in,being normal, etc. We than let the girls watch two videos. You can check them out by looking up "Shaytan vs. Hijab" and "Muslim women cosmetics The first video was basically about how this lady was wearing her abaya and scarf, makeup free. Than Shaytan appears and starts telling her that she should put on makeup and change into a more colorful Abaya and scarf. The second video was about how we as women we can put on cosmetics such as wudu and not foundation. After that, we had an open discussion. That when everything BLEW UP! One of the presenters asked the question "Why do you wear makeup?" She was talking in general but some of the girls didn't understand that and took it to offense. They basically felt like we were attacking; which we weren't. One person answered the presenters question by saying "Because we want to." That was an ignorant response in my opinion. Reason being is that we shouldn't as Muslims do things just because we want to. I mean if that were the case Allah wouldn't have sent us the Qur'an, the Sunnah, and the prophet (p.b.u.h).
The girls began yelling and having inside conversations. So what I did was tell them to stop taking it to offense, and that their not practicing active listening. Because while someone's talking; someone else has their hand up. I mean, what is that? That means that you’re quiet because your thinking about what YOU’RE going to say next. Than according to my classmates I said, "Seriously if we're going to decide to wear the eyeliner and the hijab;just take the hijab off." I thought that I said if you’re going to wear loads and loads of makeup than take the Hijab off; so I apologized letting them know that's what I meant. In my opinion the presentation could’ve gone better if everyone wasn’t talking amongst themselves and were actually listening to the people who were talking. At the same time though I feel like the fact that everyone had so much to say lets us know that this is a very big topic. I would love to do another presentation to the class about this topic once again or another topic. Comment giving me some advice about how next time’s presentation can be better! :)
