Most of you may or may not know this but on Wednesday women in Sana, Yemen decided to burn their veils and scarves as a protest against President Ali Abdullah Saleh brutal crackdown on anti-government demonstrations. Thousands of women gathered and participated in the burning of the veils. Most believe the women decided to protest now because they were inspired by Yemeni activist Takwakkol Karman, who recently won a Nobel peace prize this month. I believe the women. The burning of the veils was not to stand out against women’s rights or what the media has mentioned about wearing the veil but it was more of a way to show that they want to get rid of the old Bedouin notion of wearing a veil. Do you believe that the women are just downright fed up with their so called “tyrant” Ali Abdullah Saleh and really a plea for help? I feel since in society in general women are very under appreciated for what they do, but honestly a society without women is nothing. Why is Saleh trying to oppress these women and yes I do believe this is a plea for help, why should a women be forced to wear a veil if she chooses she doesn’t want to.?!!! This is kinda like bringing old Arab traditions back, wearing a veil is not obligatory it has always been a traditional practice and should remain that way. As women I feel we should become more educated and stand up for our rights. One thing I have learned is everyone has the power to do something its just we are to ignorant to know we have it. Often times we feel as if we are oppressed but honestly we just have to know how to stand up and fight against these injustices.
