Ok.. So thursday June 30th was like our official first meeting as coharts in the program. I found it very interesting. We did various activities and it relieved alot shyness from me also i got to see what things i had in common with my allies. I loved the step up; step down game it reminds of the game they played on "Freedom Writers". Then after that we had a debate lol this was like funniest thing to me ever ive seen many debates but not like this one, it was sooo cool actually i saw people change their minds just by others convincing them. Keynpoint during a debate is you should try to stay focused on your topic and not jump from subject to subject. If you know what your talking about people will listen. Another thing is NEVER shout during a debate the people will not listen when you do this .I learned two new words during our session which were meta-cognition and interpersonal racism. Lets see ohh yea also we learned about a famous activist named Malcom X im pretty sure we all had some background knowledge about him but yea he was a famous speaker during the civil rights movement. Another thing we are learning is how to move people from belief to action.. InshAllah i learn how during these 15 more weeks to go..! :)
Saturday was our first meeting/orientation for our youth group. I found it pretty interesting and beneficial. I know this program can help me get more involved in making changes around my community. This program seems very cool to me because it shows that youth in America are the future leaders because we are the most effective when it comes to making a change. We may not have all the power in the world but we do have enough to make changes in our community. If we want to see change we "the youth" have to be the first to take on some action, like a wise man once said "i am a product of my environment". This quote is as true as it gets because our environment is a reflection of us. If it isnt a good environment it shows our lack of caring to make a difference.
